Ol Doinyo Lengai - the Maasai 'Mountain of God' - rises 2,962m above the Rift Valley near Lake Natron, and is the only active carbonatite volcano on Earth. This overnight climb begins around midnight and hauls up steep ash and rock to reach the smoking summit crater at sunrise, with the pink soda flats of Lake Natron shimmering far below.
Drive north from Arusha to the Lake Natron area at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai (about 4-5 hours), skirting the Rift Valley escarpment as the volcano grows on the horizon. Rest in camp, with an optional walk to the Engare Sero waterfalls or a visit to a Maasai boma, then an early dinner before a few hours' sleep.

Begin climbing around midnight to beat the daytime heat, ascending steep ash and rock by headlamp to reach the 2,962m crater rim at dawn. Take in the smoking crater and sunrise over Lake Natron, then descend to the base by mid-morning and transfer back to Arusha.
